The energy transition is in full swing and requires innovative solutions in the field of generation, storage, transport, and efficient use of energy. VDL is taking the lead by developing products that are not only sustainable but also scalable and cost-efficient. Hydrogen, e-fuels, and battery technology play a key role in future solutions. That is why VDL is working on further development and production of, among other things, energy-efficient vehicles, charging infrastructure, heat exchangers, reuse of waste heat, battery and energy systems, and the production of renewable fuels, all aimed at CO2 reduction. VDL thereby contributes to a future where energy becomes smarter, cleaner, and more accessible for everyone.
Revenue Development
In 2025, the VDL companies active in the global energy sector collectively achieved €91 million in turnover, a decrease of 13 per cent compared to 2024 (€105 million).
The energy market is shifting from conventional systems to new forms of energy generation, but many of these innovations are still in the development phase, and the market is developing less quickly than hoped. The success of the energy transition can only be achieved through close cooperation between government, industry, and knowledge institutions. Government support and targeted interventions remain essential. This is also confirmed in the reports by Wennink and the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition (DSGC). Both reports emphasise the importance of further development in the areas of Digitalisation/AI, Safety/Resilience, Energy/Climate, and Life Science/Biotechnology, with (green) energy being a crucial factor for all four sectors.
Outlook
The outlook for Energy is moderate. Many projects are still in the development phase. Stimulus measures remain necessary to make progress in the development of equipment to accelerate the energy transition. In the longer term, we expect investments in sustainable energy infrastructure and technologies to increase. With our knowledge, expertise, and manufacturing capacity, VDL has everything in house to support customers in the development and volume production of new energy solutions.
